Your Function Bar Just Got a Lot More Colourful

We've redesigned the function bar and home screen buttons across all four POS platforms. They now use the same colour-tinted style as product buttons — and it makes a bigger difference than you'd think.

Building the next-generation POS

Here's something that seems like a small change but actually makes your POS noticeably nicer to use. We've redesigned the function bar buttons — the shortcut row at the bottom of the screen — on all four POS platforms (Windows, Web, Android, iPad). They used to be flat grey rectangles with a coloured icon. Now they use the same colour-tinted style as your product buttons: a soft coloured background, a matching coloured border, a coloured icon, and white text.

The same treatment has been applied to home screen buttons. If you've set up a custom home screen with a mix of product shortcuts and function buttons, the function buttons now match the visual weight and style of the products around them. No more grey gaps in an otherwise colourful grid.

Why This Matters More Than It Sounds

A POS is a tool that people use hundreds of times a day under pressure. In a busy service, your staff aren't reading button labels — they're pattern-matching by colour and position. "The green one at the bottom" is how they think about the Open Drawer button. "The purple one on the left" is how they find Product Report.

When every function button was the same grey, the only visual differentiator was the tiny coloured icon. Now the entire button carries the colour. Open Drawer is a green-tinted button. Settle Invoice is indigo. Paid Out is teal. Your eye finds them faster because there's more colour signal to work with.

This is especially noticeable on tablets where the function bar sits at the bottom of a landscape screen and the buttons are quite wide. The old grey bar looked like dead space. The new coloured bar looks like it belongs on the same screen as the product grid above it.

The Style

Each button gets:

  • Background: the button's assigned colour at 15% opacity — a soft tint, not a solid fill
  • Border: the same colour at 50% opacity, so there's a visible edge without being harsh
  • Icon: full colour
  • Text: white, so it's readable on any colour tint

This is exactly the same treatment that the Windows POS was already using for home screen function buttons. We liked it so much that we rolled it out to the function bar on all platforms and to the home screen on Web, Android, and iPad.

What Else Is In v1.2.23

This update also includes a few other improvements:

  • Split Bill seat adjustment — The Split Bill screen now has + and − buttons next to the Save & Close button so you can add or remove guest seats on the fly. Useful when an extra person joins the table or when you need to split a bill differently from the original cover count. The system won't let you remove a seat that has items in it.
  • Lite plan report limits — Lite plan accounts are now limited to 13 months of historical report data and a maximum 12-month date range. Date pickers enforce this with a minimum date, and queries are clamped server-side. Pro accounts are unaffected.
  • Lite plan product limit — Lite accounts are now capped at 500 active products. The limit is enforced everywhere products can be created: the back office product form, CSV import, AI assistant, and the POS product management screen on all platforms.

None of these are headline features, but they're the kind of steady improvements that make the system a bit more polished every time you update. And honestly, the colourful function bar might be our favourite change this week. Sometimes a bit of colour is all it takes.
